The Surface Squared team is proud to have supplied surface solutions for the expansion of West End State School (WESS) campus. The 144 year old school, located in Brisbane’s inner suburbs, saw its expansion delivered across two stages as part of the Queensland Government’s Building Future Schools Fund–an investment of more than $1.3 billion to support growing communities. This project marks an exciting milestone for the local West End community which has experienced exponential growth from urban regeneration over recent years.
On November 6th, 2019, an official sod-turning ceremony was held to celebrate the start of construction. This wonderful milestone was made possible by Deputy Premier and Local Member for South Brisbane Jackie Trad, Education Minister Grace Grace, and WESS Principal Kim McNamara.
Designed by Cox Architecture, Stage 1 respects the school’s original foundation building which was built in 1875 and is a local heritage landmark. The new buildings have been designed with a simple material and colour palette from Surface Squared, mixed with clever detailing across to ensure a long lasting and timeless design, in fitting with surrounding iconic Queensland character buildings.
